The Government has announced today that Exeter is to be a unitary council. This is a surprising development as the same proposal was turned down in 2007. It seems the recession has changed the terms of the bid.
RAF Chivenor downgraded
The search and rescue operations at RAF Chivenor covering North Cornwall and North Devon are to be phased out during nighttime hours as a money-saving exercise. It is also understood that the RAF Sea King flights will be replaced by private services from 2012.
Mansell’s £3m plane blasted
F1 ace driver, Nigel Mansell, was reported to be less than amused after Flybe technicians at Exeter Airport blasted his £3m private jet with hot gas causing £20,000 of damage.

Exeter Ship Canal

Exeter’s ship canal in autumn. The waterway was built in Elizabethan times to allow ships to sail beween Exeter and Topsham. The River Exe was not previously navigable for ships big enough for the wool trade.
