Is Western Morning News doomed?

Reuters is reporting that Daily Mail and General Trust is to sell its regional newspaper titles, including the Western Morning News and other West Country papers to a new company headed by “tabloid veteran” David Montgomery for £52.5m. It will have a 39pc stake in a new company called Local World.

It is also reported that Trinity Mirror, which also owns regional titles, will take a stake. The Mail group is also thought to be retaining a stake in the new dispensation.

Regional and local newspapers have been declining for years, losing the “river of gold” of classified local advertising to national websites which now dominate auto and property sales, plus much else.

David Montgomery is to be applauded for leading the fight back against these implacable trends, although his prospects would seem to be more romantic than practical in the longer term.
