In his new book, The Grand Design, wheelchair-bound cosmologist Stephen Hawking writes that God is not necessary for the creation of the universe. All it takes is gravity and the laws of physics.
Naturally, this has led to quite a kerfuffle in the media, even propelling God to the top of the TV news bulletins. But is he right?
A whole series of rebuttals has now appeared, even before publication day. Some are from scientists who declare themselves Christians, others are religious commentators who don’t know a lot about science, especially particle physics.
I have spent decades researching the God question from a spiritual/mystical perspective rather than a religious standpoint. Even though christened into the Anglican Church as an infant, I felt the subject deserved a wider view than simple belief and faith.
