National Trust opens Cornish mines
The National Trust is opening Cornish Mines and Engines at Pool, near Redruth, on Sunday 12 September as part of the Heritage Open Days Weekend.
The BBC reports that the Open Day will allow free access to properties that are usually closed to the public. It will include, guided tours of the whole site and areas not normally open to the public.
Cornish Mines and Engines houses two great Cornish Beam engines and an industrial heritage discovery centre, with an impressive film show telling the story of Cornish mining. Michells engine was used for lifting men and ore from the mine and the enormous Taylors engine was used to pump water from the mine.
Sue Parker, National Trust Team Leader at Cornish Mines and Engines said: “Participation in Heritage Open Days allows visitors to enjoy the whole site. This site is an exciting place to visit and we are expecting a busy day.”
A full size model of Richard Trevithick’s locomotive will also be on display.
