Flowers at Quay for Dot Stevens
Floral tributes for Dot Stevens, 80, were left on the ferry steps at Exeter’s Quay today.
Mrs Stevens of Silverton fell into the river from the steps after leaving Butt’s Ferry. The ferryman (pictured) jumped into the river and held her head above the water until others pulled her out. Despite attempts at resuscitation she was pronounced dead after arrival in hospital.
The owner of Exeter Cruises, which operates the ferry, witnessed the accident and told the Express & Echo, “Harry [the ferryman] was on his way back across the river with the ferry to collect more passengers when the lady fell in. He turned round and saw splashing and flew back across. He jumped in the river and tried to keep her head above water level. He tried to save her.”
A member of her family described the incident as “horrendous” and say she will be “missed enormously”.
