2000 jobs to go in Cornwall Council

It has been announced today that 2000 jobs — one in six of the staff — are to go from Cornwall Council.

The unitary Council, which was recently formed from an amalgamation of six District Councils and the County, has a workforce of 13,000. It’s thought that most of the job losses will be compulsory redundancies, saving £110m over four years from 2011.

Some buildings will be sold off and departments amalgamated.

The Chief Executive is paid a salary of £250,000, around twice the Prime Minister’s pay. When asked to justify that, a slightly shamefaced spokesman said the Council needed the best talent available. Clearly, though, the days of local profligacy are about to end.

Stuart Rodden of the union Unison blamed the Government’s “unnecessary” cuts for Cornwall’s problems.

It has also emerged that Exeter City Council is seeking to cut 10% from its budget.
