Major fire in Plymouth

At 2.30pm Sunday a fire broke out in a top-floor flat in Plymouth. At least six other flats in the same street were affected.

The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment in Meadfoot Terrace, and spread like wildfire across the roof-space to other flats in the block. Firefighters believe the wind helped to spread the fire.

The BBC reports that 70 firefighters tackled the blaze and took two hours to bring under control. No-one was seriously injured.

Group fire manager Paul Ray, incident commander, said, “Once the fire took hold it spread very quickly. It was so quick that the fire had already gone into next door when we arrived.”

Justin Brookman, who lives next door to the source of the fire, said, “We started hearing fireworks, like the slates popping and banging and then massive flames. In the space of five minutes you couldn’t see anything in the whole street.”

He added, “I feel for the people who live there.”
