Historic Cricklepit Mill, built on the leat near Exeter’s Quay, is to have a hydro-electric facility to provide power to nearby Devon Wildlife Trust.
The mill’s water wheel was once used to power the production of flour and wool cloth, a traditional industry in the area. Currently, it is a tourist attraction and has been heavily restored and the site tidied up.
The production of green energy is a constant theme of the 21st century, although much is generated at high cost, without commercial application.
It will be interesting to know if this scheme pays for itself within a reasonable timescale, or if it’s just another hobby project for the green industry.
