Budget breaks for autumn

Most of us can safely say that summer is behind us now that the schools have reconvened and there’s a distinctly autumnal chill in the air.

Everybody needs something to look forward to, and if the prospect of the forthcoming autumn seems gloomy and uninviting but your pocket and schedule can’t quite stretch to a full week away, why not get creative with your travel plans than plump for the usual package deal?

The budget airlines are really striving for custom at the moment, and there are some fantastic discounts available on flights to short-haul destinations which allow you to plan a conveniently timed break from one to six nights, depending on your schedule.

If you are prepared to travel mid-week or take very early or late journeys you’ll get the best prices. You may have to forgo in-flight meals or first-class comforts, but with shorter flights this is less of an issue and if you keep yourself entertained with some light refreshments and a good book, you’ll find yourself at your destination in an instant.

Searching the net for budget hotels has become easier too. Check out a variety of accommodation sites to locate the bargains and don’t be afraid to contact accommodation providers direct – you may save cash and also be in a position to negotiate upgrades or half-board options. You’ll also find that you won’t have to pay for your accommodation until the end of your stay, allowing you longer to budget for your trip.

Although there are always savings to be made on car hire online, it’s worth considering asking your hotel whether they can organise airport transfers. This saves money as you pay the driver direct. Out of season, you’ll find that there won’t be as many tourists competing for space on public transport in resort areas and it might not feel like such a necessity to have access to a car. That said, the roads won’t be so hectic either if you really want to get out and about.

If it’s sunshine you’re seeking, the Balearics and Canaries can be very pleasant in the autumn, not forgetting the Costa Del Sol or Algarve coasts. And although slightly further afield, Egypt’s Red Sea resorts can never fail to disappoint. Great city breaks can be enjoyed all over Europe, and if you are prepared to wait until closer to Christmas, the German markets offer a memorable experience to evoke the festive mood.

If you’re unconvinced that planning a bespoke break away will save you money, spend an hour or two online and cost your options out. Comparisons with the prices quoted in the brochures or by your local travel agent may well leave you pleasantly surprised.
