Driving South-West style
It’s a fact that the huge influx of visitors to the South West during the summer months, many of whom as motorists will be unfamiliar with the topography of the region, causes a huge increase in traffic volume.
Walkers, joggers and cyclists pose a particular difficulty to motorists as they negotiate the twists and turns of suddenly narrowing roads towards coastal areas. This can be disorienting, especially when navigating the high roadside banks in rural Devon.
Even dedicated all-year-rounders and competent cyclists are wary that some impatient motorist will clip them at a tricky corner in an effort to beat an oncoming vehicle to the gap at the head of the lane.
From the motorist’s perspective, it can be quite unnerving to come across a cyclist wobblibg on the road, or an inexperienced jogger who is ignoring the convention of facing oncoming traffic.
The cynic might suggest that these kinds of road users seem prepared to give everyone involved a terrifying and possible near-death experience.
Of course, you never know what’s around the corner in the South West. Large farm vehicles have to go about their business regardless of the time of year, and service vehicles that trim the verges and hedges, sweep or grit the road surfaces and collect refuse and recycling, all have their place on the roads.
Then there are the additional factors associated with the diversity of the wildlife in the region – it is not unusual to have to slow up for a family of ducks or geese crossing the lane. You may also need to halt for a herd of cows ambling along the road at milking time, or even catch a glimpse of a fox or hare dashing in front of your headlights.
So if you’re planning to spend time driving around the region, enjoying the scenery, visiting some of the beautiful beaches, rural areas or historic towns as part of your holiday, be aware that sensitivity to other road users is essential and remember that a city mentality is not going to work for you.
Relax and be courteous and safe. You’ll soon find that motoring in Devon and Cornwall is a true delight.
