Blu-ray on a roll

Consumer trends show that people are less inclined to spend their money on leisure activities outside the home, like gym memberships. They are instead turning to less costly options of enjoying an evening in with a good movie and some home cooked food.

It’s no surprise, then, that the home entertainment industry has fared reasonably well during the economic downturn and seems to be defying the pessimistic publicity we’ve seen about consumer spending habits.

Recent figures from the British Video Association indicate that there has been tremendous growth in sales of Blu-ray format discs, which offer a high definition picture and sound quality. It seems that once a consumer has witnessed the delights of Blu-ray for themselves, they’re unlikely to turn back to the less impressive output of the DVD.

Once consumers have made the switch to Blu-ray, they are often keen to replace their existing DVD collection with the newer format. That would account for older movies, such as the sci-fi classic Blade Runner and the cult favourite Trainspotting being cited by the British Video Association as enjoying Blu-ray success.

The other high-tech format, HD, appears to be losing out to Blu-ray now that Microsoft has taken it up.
