Yahoo! weds Microsoft

Microsoft and Yahoo! have just unveiled a 10-year search and advertising partnership to challenge Google, the world’s dominant internet search engine.

Yahoo! will use Microsoft’s new Bing search engine on its sites, and sell it to premium search advertisers. As reward, it will reap 88pc of the revenue from search ad sales on its site for the first five years, and have the right to sell ads on some Microsoft sites. On the face of it, it looks good for Yahoo!

What Microsoft gets is involvement in Yahoo!’s search engine, which ranks as the second largest in the world with a global market share of 8pc, and the chance to mount a stronger challenge to Google, which has 67pc of the world audience.

Microsoft has been after struggling Yahoo! for some time. The five-year deal could see the end of Yahoo! when that period expires.
