Apple tops tech sales

Apple seems to be riding out the deep recession worldwide, thanks largely to its new 3G iPhone.

The US-based technology company skipped the consumer trend by producing a forecast-beating profit of $1.23bn (£747m) in the quarter to the end of June. This translates as the most successful non-Christmas three-month period in the Apple’s 32-year history.

Right up front are sales of the new version of its iPhone. Other stars include Mac-badged computers and its music-storing iPods. They all helped to deliver total revenues of $8.34bn, up 12pc on last year.

Phone sales alone represent a seven-fold increase on the same period a year ago, and a 36pc rise on first quarter 2009.

Star of the show is the iPhone 3GS, launched in early June. Apple’s chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer said that the company is unable to make enough 3GS phones to meet demand. They are working on that though.

The downside is that the more iPhones they sell, the fewer iPods are moved. This is inevitable because of the overlap between the products.

Certainly, the powerful iPhone looks a better buy right now.
